On the road to learning Chinese abroad, many parents will face a common confusion: their children can speak some simple Chinese at home, but it is difficult to improve their true understanding and expression. How to make children fall in love with Chinese and make progress in the absence of a language environment? 

The story we share today comes from Alex, a student of Tonle Chinese. His mother accompanied her children to learn Chinese through "listening to storytelling", and their comprehension, reading and thinking skills have been significantly improved in the past two years. This is not only a learning experience sharing, but also an educational method worth learning from. 

 

From "University" to "Journey to the West": the starting point of reading interest 

Since 2016, we have let our children read "University". At first, I didn't understand the meaning, but after insisting on reading, I found that I knew the words in it, and my interest in Chinese gradually developed. 

In the classroom of joy, children's favorite thing is to listen to storytelling. Teacher Bitao will pick out the idioms and historical allusions in the storytelling to explain, and they can probably understand the meaning, and their interest is getting stronger and stronger. 

At home, children usually speak Chinese very simply, mostly daily words such as "eat and sleep". But by listening to the commentary, his understanding improved significantly. 

 

Storytelling "opens up the nerves" of children's Chinese ability 

We first listened to "Journey to the West", and boys liked it very much. Later, I listened to "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", "Talking about China" and "The Story of Tang Dynasty Poets". I listened to "The Story of the Poets of the Tang Dynasty" because the school was learning ancient poetry, so that it could cooperate with the classroom. Now, children can even listen to "Hundred Schools of Thought". 

When listening to storytelling, I stop and ask my child, "What would you do if you were a historical figure in the story?" "Children can not only understand stories, but also think. Now, he can even read "One Hundred Thousand Whys" without illustrations. 

Challenges and differences in learning Chinese abroad 

Teacher Qingxin's observation: 

Compared with domestic children of the same age, overseas children do have a gap in oral expression. Domestic children have a good language environment, and the ancient texts they learn are not easy to translate into spoken language, but they have more opportunities to practice in life. 

In foreign countries, Chinese communication at home is relatively simple, so Tongle Chinese storytelling teaching just makes up for this gap. Through a lot of listening and reading, there is not much difference in children's listening and reading skills. 

 

Fun facts in learning: the collision of idioms and life 

Children grow up in the United States, and after learning some idioms, they sometimes use them incorrectly and mix written and spoken words, which is very interesting. 

When listening to "The Story of the Poets of the Tang Dynasty", the child asked me: "Why is it that if one person in the family dies, he will be so poor that he has no food to eat?" Even if my parents are no longer there, there are still grandparents and grandparents. The way of understanding is laughable. 

 

Parents' questions and suggestions 

As a parent, I also have some confusion: 

  • What should a boy do if he likes "Journey to the West", but the girl doesn't like it very much and doesn't find a more suitable storytelling? 

  • Children have exams when learning idioms, and they master them well. Now studying history, there are no exams, and I am worried that the mastery effect is not as good as before. 

 

Teacher's response and educational philosophy 

Teacher Bitao responded: 

  • About girls listening to "Journey to the West": In fact, many girls also like it. The key is not to worry too much about whether the child understands at first. If the input is sufficient, it will naturally be understood. Just like AI's deep learning, it requires a sufficient amount of data. 

  • About learning assessment: Tongle Chinese adopts the method of "circulation and spiral", and knowledge will appear repeatedly at different stages, so there is no need to rush for success. 

He also shared his experience: children listen to storytelling repeatedly "on wheels", even if they behave "in a daze" at the time, they can remember the plot in surprise a few years later. 

 

The core of education: quality and values 

In the teacher's observation, Alex is a particularly good student in the class. In two years, he has accumulated a wealth of language and cultural information through listening to a lot of books, and can even understand the "Hundred Schools of Thought" - which is more than many Chinese children who have taken the AP Chinese exam. 

Tongle Chinese not only emphasizes knowledge education, but also attaches more importance to quality education. Storytelling can establish a correct outlook on life and values for children, and at the same time naturally improve Chinese ability.

我的“西游”之路
“杨子辰(Michael Yang),WA,同乐中文学校  我的“西游”之路 世界上的文学作品如同满天的星星,在这些星星里面,有四颗特别耀眼——《西游记》、《三国演义》、《水浒传》、《红楼梦》。我相信很多人都读过这些书,而我最先接触到的是《西游记》,它深深地影响了我的生活。 1 动画片里的英雄 很小的时候,我就知道《西游记》。一开始是看动画片,我看到了一个英雄的故事——孙悟空是极有天赋却不被接纳的英雄,所以他大闹天宫,对付一群“很坏的神仙”;玉皇大帝是个贪生怕死、没有能力的“胆小鬼”;而唐僧呢,不过是个肉眼凡胎的“傻师傅”。小时候的世界就是那么简单:好人打坏人,非黑即白! 2 漫画讲西游 《西游记》这部动画片,我看了好多遍。后来,我的中文越来越好,就开始阅读简单而容易理解的《西游记》,比如漫画版本。但是在我眼中,这仍然是一个“厉害猴子打形形色色妖怪”的故事。漫画把原著简化了很多,就像去掉树根只留枝叶的大树,虽然有一样的剧情,却没有原著的深意,我没有机会思考作者真正想表达什么。 3 原著的艰难 五年级时,我拥有了一本《西游记》原著。当我如饥似渴地打开,想要一探究竟时,那些密密麻麻的明代白话文,就像一座高耸入云的大山,让我望而却步。比如什么“混沌未分天地乱,茫茫渺渺无人见”或者“易曰:‘大哉乾元!至哉坤元…’”。我像是去了一个伸手不见五指的山洞探险,却没带手电筒,几乎不可能完成!所以没读多久,我就放弃了原著。 4 原著的深意 随着对中国历史越来越了解,我才真正明白《西游记》作为四大名著的深意。我开始想,作者为什么会这样写?联想到小说写作的方法,我明白了作者不只是为了编故事,更有可能是在描写自己的生活,表达自己对人生的见解:孙悟空从调皮地大闹天宫,到被惩罚压五行山,再到漫长的西天取经,这不正是一个人从叛逆到成熟的过程吗? 5 《黑神话:悟空》,打游戏! 2024年,《黑神话:悟空》来了,我非常高兴,打完两次游戏通关。打游戏时,我也会在网上搜索游戏打法、游戏解读。很多人说,《黑神话:悟空》把《西游记》描述得很黑暗:世界上有一种能量,叫灵蕴,所有生命都需要和想要灵蕴。神仙只是一种有更多灵蕴的生命,他们也会死,不死的方法是夺取人的信仰,并吸取他们的灵蕴。不听话的神仙会被吸取所有的灵蕴,贬到凡间。他们中有一些活下来,变成了飞鸟走兽,被叫做妖。孙悟空想为众生争取公平,让大家都可以长生不老。这个游戏设定让我意识到,同一个故事可以有完全不同的解读。 6 再次读原著 《黑神话:悟空》让我重新燃起了对《西游记》的热情。为了理解游戏情节,我再次翻开原著,还开始看up主“渤海小吏”的解读。这次,我理解到更多内涵:比如从大闹天宫到九九八十一难,从调皮骄傲的齐天大圣到深谋远虑的斗战圣佛,这是成长;比如孙悟空常说的“佛就在心里,每个人心里都有一个灵山”;比如孙悟空每到一个地方,利用人心的特点,做成功事情;比如社会的运转,这个时候,我也在读《明朝那些事儿》,原来《西游记》里也隐喻了明朝官场的腐败与斗争。 7 最后的感叹 《西游记》就像一座挖不完的宝藏。表面上看,这是一部降妖除魔的小说,细细品味,又有深刻的内涵。它讲述成长的历程、做人的道理、社会和政治……从看热闹到看门道,这部中文经典陪伴我的成长,在每个年纪都给我新的惊喜。我相信,《西游记》这位“老朋友”还会继续陪伴我成长,教会我更多世界的道理。

秋⽇领悟
“种恺骅 Kaihua Skyler Chong年龄/年级: 10 / Grade 6  ⼀个初秋的下午,我通过踢⼀场⾜球⽐赛领悟到了⼀个能让我终⾝受益的道理:成功不仅源于个⼈的才能,更是来⾃于团队的合作和坚持不懈的精神。 那天暑⽓未消,使⼈挥汗如⾬。绿⾊球场上初⻅⼀抹⾦⻩。⼀群⼗来岁的球员跃跃欲试。对⽅作为主场,已在训练有素地热⾝。可我们的队员还在陆续到达,努⼒地适应着客场的环境。 上半场,因我们的守⻔员迟到, 教练安排了位没有守⻔经验的队友把⻔。作为后位,我拼全⼒拦下了对⽅的多次进攻。不过我们队还是丢了六个球,以 6:1 收场。 中场休息时,我们队垂头丧⽓地聚在⼀起,听教练耐⼼地强调合作和坚持,看教练⽤⽩板演示失误,指导挽救⽅案。 下半场,我们团结⼀致,奋⼒拼搏,没给对⽅任何进球机会,把⽐分保持在了 6:1。 赛后,教练和我们谈了很久。她指出,⼀个⼈很难应付对⽅的九个球员。互相配合才能有效抗衡。她还提到,⼀旦有⼈放弃,失误就会被对⽅利⽤来组织反攻。她在下半场看到了希望。我们顽强坚持,有效配合,坚强地⾯对了强劲的对⼿。 回味着教练的话,我想起了荀⼦在《劝学》中写到的: 骐骥⼀跃,不能⼗步。 驽⻢⼗驾,功在不舍。 锲⽽舍之,朽⽊不折。 锲⽽不舍,⾦⽯可镂。 在这个初秋的下午,我领悟到了:成功的关键不在个⼈的能⼒,⽽在于团队的协作与持之以恒的努力。我要勤奋学习,在培养⾃我才能的同时,还要注重与团队的合作。在遇到困难时,我要和团队⼀起勇往直前,拼搏到底,直到达到更⾼的⽬标!
